Charity & Community

Doing what’s right comes naturally to us. We’re right at the heart of the communities we serve and we believe we have a responsibility to do the right thing for our customers, for good causes, and for the world we all live in.

Our work with communities

As a nationwide retailer, we work with communities across the country. Our Community Champions lead the way in building relationships with local charities and groups. They’re a key link between our stores and sites, and the community, working to help good causes with fundraising, donations, practical support and much more.

Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture

Morrisons is proud of its history in Bradford and pleased to be a ‘Major Partner’ of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture.

The UK City of Culture title is awarded every four years by the government and events will take place throughout Bradford District to shine a spotlight on the city’s arts and cultural scene.

We want to play our part to ensure 2025 is a memorable year for Bradford and will celebrate with performances and events across our stores and sites in Bradford. We will also pay tribute to Bradford’s significant food heritage with limited edition products made locally.

Tackling food poverty

We know that food poverty persists, and as a major supermarket we can help make a difference. We work with a range of food redistribution charities including The Bread and Butter Thing and Fairshare to make sure that surplus food in our manufacturing, online and store network is donated rather than discarded.

We make it easy for customers to donate to their local food bank in store. And we give them the option of donating online to the Trussell Trust’s network of foodbanks, too.

We also support local schools, community groups and the UK Government’s Holiday Activities and Food Programme, by donating food and essentials to local holiday clubs. Not to mention free meals in our cafes for families during the holidays through our ‘Ask for Henry’ and ‘Ask for Ellen’ initiatives.

The Morrisons Foundation

The Morrisons Foundation has now donated more than £42m to over 3,500 charities since its launch in February 2015. This included a new fund to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Morrisons which gave 125 of our colleagues’ favourite charities a share of £1m.

Our colleagues also give generously through payroll giving. Collectively we donate £28,000 each month to more than 230 charities, which even earned us the Payroll Giving Platinum Award in 2024.

Our work with Marie Curie

In November 2024, we launched a three year partnership with Marie Curie, the UK's leading palliative care charity. Marie Curie is there for anyone with an illness they’re likely to die from, along with those close to them, and we’re proud to play a part in what they do.

Together, we’re aiming to raise £15 million in three years. This money will help to build a legacy of hospices that are fit for the future, enable more nurses to deliver expert care at home, and inspire moments that matter so people at the end of life can create precious memories with loved ones.

Supporting charities

We select a main charity partner every three years, and our most recent was the children’s hospice charity, Together for Short Lives. We helped them raise £10.5m, and that money is helping children’s hospices across the UK provide care to families who are looking after a seriously ill child.

We’re also proud to support lots of other important causes and national charity campaigns, like the Poppy Appeal, Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal, and the Alzheimer’s Society ‘Forget Me Not Appeal’.

In 2024, we even launched a major new charity event, the ‘Morrisons Big Night Out’. It brought more than 1,300 guests together to raise over £738,000 for GroceryAid and Together for Short Lives.

We know that charity begins at home - but we also know that doesn’t end there. That’s why we’re an Emergency Response Partner for the Disasters Emergency Committee, and support the DEC Middle East Humanitarian Appeal to help millions of people across Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region who are in urgent need of food, shelter and medical care.

Raising awareness

We use the platform we’ve built to raise awareness of important issues, too. We’ve supported NHS England with their ‘Be Body Aware’ Campaign, and we remain a key partner of Bowel Cancer UK’s Get On A Roll campaign.
